Local football clubs, a district cricket association and other sporting organisations are set to benefit from City of Canterbury Bankstown’s upgrades to Beaman Park Sports Fields at Earlwood

Local football clubs, a district cricket association and other sporting organisations are set to benefit from City of Canterbury Bankstown’s upgrades to Beaman Park Sports Fields at Earlwood.

Work is underway on the $3 million project, which will include the reconstruction of the playing surface, new sports fields, lighting and modernising of the irrigation and drainage systems on the Eastern fields.

Funding for the project is in partnership with the NSW Government through a $1 million grant awarded through the NSW Office of Sport’s Multi-Sport Community Facility Fund.

Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Bilal El-Hayek said the park is a popular place for locals and home to a number of district level sporting organisations.

“These upgrades will make a huge difference for everyday use of the park and weekend sport,” Mayor El-Hayek said.

“The old playing surface was uneven and in need of some serious levelling.

“Once complete, the new surface will provide a better playing experience and increase the amount of playing time during wet weather periods.”

Canterbury and District Soccer Football Association CEO Trent Thomas said Beaman Park is the base for three major football clubs who, between them, have more than 2,800 active players.

“With the significant growth in community football participation, the intensity of use of sporting fields has also grown,” Mr Thomas said.

“Football Canterbury is delighted the investment will result in improved playing surfaces with good irrigation and floodlighting for the safety of participants as well as other users of the park.”

Minister for Sport, Steve Kamper, said that projects like these show the NSW Government’s commitment to providing infrastructure that better caters for the needs of local communities.

“Well designed and utilised sport infrastructure is critical for providing increased participation opportunities that ensure the community keeps healthy, active and connected.”

“These surface and lighting improvements will mean more players have more playing time in an environment that makes them feel safe and supported to do so.”

Member for Canterbury Sophie Cotsis said the improved playing surfaces would help to deliver more opportunities for the local community to participate in sport.

“Every day of the week, but especially on the weekend, Beaman Park is such great location for young people to play sports of all kinds.

“Ask any of the local sporting teams and far too often winter matches are washed out. So I am so glad that with this funding, the local community will have such great facilities all year round.”

The Beaman Park Sports Fields upgrades are expected to be completed early next year, weather permitting.

In the coming months, Council will also commence upgrades to The Crest at Bass Hill and Croydon Park Sports Field.
